AI tools are reshaping how we think, write, and learn—and our students are already navigating this landscape. To prepare the next generation of education leaders, we have a responsibility to model thoughtful, effective AI integration. Our faculty need practical support to navigate this landscape—not just understanding what AI can do, but developing the pedagogical wisdom to use it in ways that enhance rather than replace meaningful learning experiences.

We’ve designed this initiative to build HGSE faculty’s knowledge, skills, and confidence to more effectively integrate AI into their teaching practice and support student learning. Current faculty AI literacy varies widely, from early adopters to those who haven't yet engaged with these tools. This initiative meets faculty where they are, providing multiple entry points and pathways for growth while strengthening our faculty community's collaborative teaching culture.

## A CONTINUUM OF ENGAGEMENT

Faculty members can join at various stages and progress at their own pace, in a range of engagement types, listed below with sample activities:

## Explore

- Explore the TLL [Teaching and Learning with Generative AI](/teaching-and-learning-generative-ai "Teaching and Learning with Generative AI") resources.
- Read an article, chapter or book about using AI in teaching.
- Listen to a podcast episode about using AI in teaching.
- Watch a recording of AI event about using AI in teaching.
- Sit in on a colleague’s class session where they’re discussing / modeling uses of AI. For suggestions of HGSE courses you might visit, ask [Liz City](https://www.gse.harvard.edu/directory/faculty/elizabeth-city), [David Dockterman](https://www.gse.harvard.edu/directory/faculty/david-dockterman) or [Allison Pingree](https://tll.gse.harvard.edu/people/allison-pingree).

## Discuss

- Have a conversation with a colleague (at HGSE or beyond) about using AI in your course.
- Participate in an upcoming [focus session or quick lab](/projects-initiatives/leap-initiative/focused-workshops-quick-labs "Quick Labs & Focus Sessions") offered by the TLL.
- [Meet 1:1 with a TLL consultant](/projects-initiatives/leap-initiative/ai-office-hours-consultations "AI Office Hours & Consultations") about using AI in your course.

## Try

Quick experiments—try something in your course:

- Revise an assignment to incorporate student use of AI—[See examples from HGSE colleagues.](https://tll.gse.harvard.edu/ai-hgse-classroom)
- Host an in-class panel of education leaders discussing how they’re using AI in their work.
- Use AI to
    - [Draft a session plan for your next class, or to improve on one you’ve used in the past](https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/19yb7Epjky3TrmEl-aiT_Lm_biD8km4SgLI0HiNJUfG0/edit?slide=id.g307021a2693_0_0#slide=id.g307021a2693_0_0).
    - [Create a rubric for one of your assignments.](https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/19yb7Epjky3TrmEl-aiT_Lm_biD8km4SgLI0HiNJUfG0/edit?slide=id.g307021a2693_0_16#slide=id.g307021a2693_0_16)
    - Draft a slide deck for your class.

## Extend

Building on initial experiments, reflect and iterate based on what worked and what didn't.

- Discuss what you tried (with a colleague, or [TLL consultant](/projects-initiatives/leap-initiative/ai-office-hours-consultations "AI Office Hours & Consultations"), or in an [Extended Learning Group](https://tll.gse.harvard.edu/extended-learning-groups-cohort-based-multiple-sessions)): what worked / what didn’t; what might you want to change in the future.
- Building on what you tried, create a new version or variation for a different course, class session, or context.

## Share

- Present discoveries at the next HGSE AI Showcase on May 11, 2026 ([HGSE AI Showcase 2025 slide deck](https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1x1ibrQ-3VwMZaI8DM8T1Rma3OyyWgQsM3rEmWjv4Yps/edit?usp=sharing)) or at other seminars or professional conferences.

### Tracking Progress

Faculty members, please record any and all of your engagements with AI related to teaching. That will help us get a picture of how we are all engaging. AND if at least 90% of us do something (anything!) related to AI and our teaching, then the Dean’s Office will throw us a pizza party! (And maybe we’ll all learn something and prepare our students better, too.)
